Environment & Safety

Focus on Safety and Environmental Protection:

All recovery and processing operations for the Resource Recovery Project will be fully contained within a single site, and will utilize a closed loop system, protecting the neighborhood and surrounding community from the risk of spill or accident.

NO FRACKING:

NO controversial shale “hydraulic fracking” technology will be used for recovery. This well-characterized and previously developed portion of the Torrance oil field is comprised of inter-bedded thin sands and naturally fractured shales that already provide the reservoir characteristics necessary for oil production.

The Project has been developed over the past year by a team of professional experts and engineers.  An in-depth explanation of the construction and operations of the proposed resource recovery facility, highlighting incorporation of today’s latest, proven technology that can address potential environmental issues which has been included in the project’s application submitted to the city of Hermosa Beach (and can be accessed by visiting www.hermosabch.org).

The proposed project will utilize modern methods and operational advancements related to safety and efficiency to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, and to deliver important economic benefits to the community.

Important Technical Studies Document Safety and Environmental Protection:

Additional detailed technical studies conducted by outside experts and engineers have analyzed the methods, technologies and safety elements proposed for the recovery and processing facility and its operations.  These also are available from the city of Hermosa Beach (and can be accessed by visiting www.hermosabch.org).

These studies document how production equipment, construction equipment, and even vehicles, will minimize potential environmental impacts of both construction and ongoing operations of the project. Importantly, these studies document that the Hermosa Beach Resource Recovery Project will adopt today’s latest, safest and most environmentally advanced technology, which will significantly reduce environmental impacts compared to the previously approved oil recovery project of 1993.
